Oklahoma City police released video this week showing a suspect throwing a Molotov cocktail at a victim seated in a wheelchair around 8 a.m. July 2. The incident unfolded right across the street from police headquarters.
“The fact that this happened is something that should shock the community,” said Meghan Mueller, president and CEO of the Homeless Alliance.
Police reported that detectives and a quick-thinking bystander immediately rushed into danger to help the victim and take the suspect into custody on the spot. The city’s fire department also arrived promptly to provide crucial medical aid.
The victim, who is homeless, sustained minor injuries including burns on his neck and arms but is expected to recover. He declined hospital treatment and told reporters he feels grateful and believes God was with him during the incident.
Authorities identified the suspect as Alexander Emery, a 38-year-old with a criminal history dating back about a decade. Charges include trespassing, burglary, drug offenses, breaking and entering, and assault. Emery’s bond amount is $200,000.
Mueller described the attack as “absolutely horrific” and added that “these are people, these are our neighbors, these are our fellow Oklahomans.”
