The bizarre incident unfolded on Saturday night in Kearny when police responded to a report of a man shot with a “pointed object” near the intersection of Kearny Avenue and Johnston Avenue. By the time officers arrived, the victim had died from his injuries according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
One witness, John Kalicki, described finding the man lying in front of a liquor and grocery store: “I thought he was sleeping… That’s when I saw the arrow in his back.”
Police identified a suspect who barricaded himself inside a two-story home on Kearny Avenue. The standoff continued into Sunday, with police deploying SWAT teams to negotiate his release while neighbors were instructed to shelter in place.
Rebecca Szymanski, another witness, recounted hearing the suspect yell: “I can’t come out! I can’t do that!” before officers stated they were there to help.
At approximately 5 a.m. on Sunday, fires erupted at the home, forcing some residents to evacuate. The suspect eventually emerged around 1 p.m., armed with knives, and was taken into custody.
The victim was identified as Pablo Criollo of Harrison. His family established a GoFundMe account for burial expenses. The suspect, Oscar Feijoo, faces murder, weapons, and arson charges. Other charges are expected.
Neighbor Anna Christina revealed she had previously warned the man about throwing rocks into her backyard: “And one day I say to him, ‘Please don’t do this, because if you do I’m going to call the police,’ and he got mad at me.”
