A Delaware state trooper was killed in an active shooter incident at a New Castle County DMV facility on Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
Law enforcement officials responded to the situation at the facility in Minquadale on Hessler Boulevard around 2 p.m.
“They said a guy just walked up to the motor vehicle and just started shooting. It don’t have to be like that,” Delaware Governor Matt Meyer (D) wrote on social media, adding that state and local law enforcement had secured the scene and confirmed the shooter’s death. The governor also stated there was no active threat to the public.
Roxzanne Johnson expressed her sadness about the incident to a reporter, saying, “It’s just really sad. Like, when does it stop?”
Video footage from inside the facility showed bullet damage in a window, though it remains unclear whether the gunfire originated from within or outside the building.
Several individuals were treated for minor injuries at the scene, including a 40-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man experiencing shortness of breath.
Officials reported that an officer may have been stationed at the facility prior to the shooting.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
