On January 24, 2026, a federal agent fatally shot an armed suspect in Minneapolis during a targeted operation against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the suspect “violently resisted” efforts by officers to disarm him and was found carrying a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic handgun with two magazines and no identification.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:05 a.m. CT when DHS law enforcement officers were conducting their operation. After the agent fired defensive shots to protect himself and others, medics on scene provided immediate aid but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. DHS stated that the suspect’s actions “looked like an individual wanted to do maximum damage,” with no valid identification and a history of violent intent.
Approximately 200 rioters arrived at the scene shortly after, obstructing law enforcement and assaulting officers. Crowd control measures were deployed for public safety as tensions escalated. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara reported that the fatally shot man was 37 years old and urged residents to remain peaceful, stating the situation was “not sustainable.”
In response to the shooting, Minnesota’s Democratic leadership has demanded the removal of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from the state. Governor Tim Walz stated, “Minnesota has had it. This is sickening. The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”
U.S. Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith also called for immediate action, with Klobuchar writing: “To the Trump administration and the Republicans in Congress who have stood silent: Get ICE out of our state NOW.” Smith added: “Another catastrophic shooting in Minneapolis by federal agents. ICE must leave now so MPD can secure the scene and do their jobs.”
The Border Patrol Union described the incident as defensive, stating that agents are trained to protect themselves and others during lawful operations. The union condemned recent rhetoric from politicians and media outlets that has encouraged confrontations with law enforcement: “They have encouraged these reckless confrontations and attacks on our agents and officers who are performing their lawful duties.”
