Trump and Minneapolis Mayor Agree to End Operation Metro Surge Following Lethal Shooting

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey stated that some federal immigration agents will begin leaving the city tomorrow, and Minneapolis will not enforce federal immigration law, following an agreement with President Donald Trump to de-escalate a tense situation after an anti-ICE protester was fatally shot.

The incident occurred on Saturday when Alex Pretti, a 20-year-old man carrying a firearm, was shot during a confrontation with federal agents conducting Operation Metro Surge. According to reports, Pretti attempted to interfere with the operation and one agent seized the firearm before shots rang out.

President Trump said he had spoken via telephone with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, adding that “violent criminals should be held accountable based on the crimes they commit, not based on where they are from.”

Frey noted: “I spoke with President Trump today and appreciated the conversation. I expressed how much Minneapolis has benefited from our immigrant communities and was clear that my main ask is that Operation Metro Surge needs to end. The president agreed the present situation can’t continue.” He also confirmed that federal agents will start leaving the area tomorrow, with continued efforts to terminate all operations involved in the incident.

Minnesota Governor Walz criticized the administration’s actions, stating: “Minnesota has had it. This is sickening. The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”
