In a recent interview, Noga Landau, co-writer of the television series “Starfleet Academy,” revealed that the show has redefined Klingon warrior culture.
Landau explained that in the latest episode, “Vox in Excelso,” character Jay-Den Kraag rejects his people’s tradition of hunting and instead practices medicine. Kraag is also portrayed as a pacifist with a fear of public speaking.
Landau further noted that Kraag comes from a polyamorous household: two fathers and one mother. She stated, “There are so many folks alive in the world right now, and there always have been, who have three parents.”
“We put our heads together when we were [writing] the episode, and we said, ‘There are going to be people in our audience who’ve never seen their kind of family before on screen,'” Landau added.
The character, played by actor Karim Diane, has been described as someone who “doesn’t like to battle. He wants to love people and heal people and save people.” Fans have also shared screenshots showing the Klingon being caressed by a nonbinary human character.
This development follows earlier Star Trek lore, including the introduction of a nonbinary doctor in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” in 2022.
