Authorities Investigate Potential Connection Between Brown University Shooting and MIT Professor’s Fatal Attack

A person of interest has been identified in connection with the deadly Brown University shooting on Saturday. Authorities have issued a warrant for this individual and are investigating possible ties between the incident and the fatal shooting of Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nuno Loureiro days later.

According to reports, Loureiro was fatally shot in his Brookline home Monday night and died early Tuesday at a hospital. He was 47 years old and described as a Jewish vocal pro-Israel nuclear scientist who lived in a first-floor apartment.

A neighbor said the crime was “a surprise … and a shooting in a state where it’s so hard to even have a gun?” The neighbor also noted that a car was parked in the wrong direction and seemed to be waiting nearby.

While the FBI has stated they are unaware of any connection between the two shootings, multiple sources familiar with the investigation reported discovering evidence suggesting a link.

Police collected DNA from the person of interest at Brown University and have images and video matching eyewitness descriptions. A suspect was initially detained over the weekend but later released after law enforcement determined it was the wrong individual.
