Border Patrol Officer’s Finger Found in Jar After Minneapolis Shooting Kills Former George Floyd Protester

A fatal confrontation between federal agents and Alex Pretti, a former George Floyd protester, left the 37-year-old Illinois man dead in Minneapolis. The incident occurred after Pretti was fatally shot during an altercation with Border Patrol officers.

According to family members, Pretti was a Democratic voter with a permit to carry a concealed firearm who previously took to the streets in 2020 protesting the death of George Floyd. His father, Michael Pretti, stated he warned his son: “Do not engage, do not do anything stupid.” Pretti worked as an intensive care nurse at a VA hospital and was described by family members as someone who “cared deeply about people” and was upset by Trump’s “immigration crackdown in his city.”

The Department of Homeland Security reported that its officers were conducting a targeted operation against an illegal alien wanted for violent assault. During the encounter, the suspect approached agents with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun and violently resisted.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin shared graphic images showing part of an HSI officer’s finger in a jar, stating: “Minneapolis rioters attacked our law enforcement officer and one of them bit off our HSI officer’s finger.” She called the incident “an avoidable tragedy” resulting from “the total failure of Minnesota’s city and state officials.”

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem added that protesters who rushed to the scene “began to obstruct and to assault law enforcement officers,” throwing objects such as ice. She blamed Democratic Governor Tim Walz for labeling ICE as the “gestapo” and other Democrats for “painting targets on federal immigration officers’ backs.”

The incident followed a separate shooting where an armed suspect was fatally shot by federal agents in Minneapolis, prompting U.S. Rep. Greg Steube to cite it as a reason Trump should invoke the Insurrection Act.

Minnesota’s National Guard has been deployed at the request of Mayor Jacob Frey, with Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt also calling for support from the National Guard. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed an ongoing investigation into the shooting, stating: “This avoidable tragedy is a result of the total failure of Minnesota’s city and state officials who have resisted federal law enforcement.”
