Brown University Shooting Claims Two Lives; Police Search for Shooter

A shooting at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island has left at least two people dead and others wounded.

Police are still searching for the shooter, described as a man dressed in black, who was active near the Barus and Holley engineering building on Hope Street just after 4:30 p.m. Saturday.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley stated that the doors of the engineering building where the shooting occurred were unlocked due to final exams being held there, which allowed anyone to enter at the time. “Based on what we heard from officials at Brown, anybody could have accessed the building,” he said.

Providence Fire Chief Derek Silva confirmed two victims were found dead at the scene. Eight additional individuals are being treated at Rhode Island Hospital, with six in critical but stable condition, one in critical condition, and another in stable condition. A later update identified a ninth injured person who sustained non-life-threatening injuries from fragments of gunfire.

Smiley declined to provide details about the victims, including whether they were Brown University students. The university announced just before 8:30 p.m. that campus lockdown remains in effect and urged all community members to stay sheltered in place.

Providence Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara said police believe they are searching for a single gunman, with no weapon recovered and the type of firearm unknown. Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee spoke with FBI Director Kash Patel and reported that local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies are cooperating to locate the suspect, emphasizing their shared goal of ensuring public safety while pursuing the attacker.
