Congressional Gym Exposes Fear of Trump Threats in Party Divides

Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell of California disclosed that Republicans privately criticize the president but fear backlash from his supporters if they speak out publicly.

Swalwell made the remarks Tuesday during an interview when asked about interactions with members of the opposing party at the congressional gym.

“The fear they express to me is that if they speak out against Donald Trump, he sends his Twitter army at them, and their lives change,” Swalwell said.

“Republicans and Democrats work out together. That’s where I see who they really are. And it’s quite frustrating because the st they talk about the president — knowing what he’s doing is wrong — but you also hear the fear they’re hearing at home: ‘Don’t speak up. Don’t be the tallest poppy in the field,’” he added.

Swalwell noted that individuals who express such concerns are often told to find a different job because they cannot handle the criticism inherent in political life.

“The worst part is that these members say one thing in hearings and act differently in the gym — it’s mostly rooted in fear,” he continued.

The representative also stated that “the violence and threats come when you go after this guy.”

Swalwell has announced a run for California governor, though polling shows minimal support with no candidate garnering more than 13% of Californians’ backing in December, and a plurality of 44% undecided.

Current California Governor Gavin Newsom is widely believed to be expanding his name recognition ahead of potential presidential aspirations in 2028.
