Rev. Dr. Michael Woolf of the Lake Street Church in Evanston, Illinois, was arrested during an anti-ICE protest held at a detention facility last November. The church is now facing increased attention for its use of political messaging during their Christmas nativity scene.
Woolf drew parallels between Jesus’ birth under Roman occupation and the current situation with immigration enforcement. He explained that he intended to depict the nativity scene using relevant contemporary elements, including literal representations of ICE agents as Roman soldiers who had allegedly thrown Joseph to the ground and placed zip ties on baby Jesus’ hands. The display aimed to highlight “the real-world things that are happening” by connecting them symbolically to biblical accounts.
Woolf stood near a sign for his church which also prominently displayed an LGBTQ flag, emphasizing their focus on social justice issues like “dismantling racism.” He stated it is crucial how people treat neighbors because “how we treat our neighbors… is how we are treating Jesus.”
The arrest occurred at the protest where several law enforcement officers were reportedly injured during the incident. WMAQ-TV documented the scene and interviewed Woolf about his interpretation of the nativity display.
The Lake Street Church website further details their sanctuary policy, offering refuge to individuals affected by “inhumane immigration policies” including those seeking asylum who are currently housed at this location.
