A massive 147-foot-wide mural near the intersection of Charleston and Las Vegas Boulevards in Las Vegas has been unveiled as part of the Remember Iryna memorial project. The artwork, painted by graffiti artist Gear Duran, honors Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian woman who was randomly murdered on a public train in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The initiative, led by Elizabeth Trykin, has completed over 20 large-scale murals across multiple U.S. cities with more installations underway. More than 900 artists have reached out to participate in the project.
Elon Musk pledged $1 million in September after Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe proposed the memorial effort and donated $500,000 of his own funds. Both McCabe and Musk fulfilled their financial commitments.
Duran stated that the murals are not political statements but aim to combat the politicization of tragedies such as Zarutska’s murder. “Evil doesn’t see policy. Evil doesn’t see left or right. Evil is just evil,” he said. “What we really need is just to be able to come together and stop politicizing everything so much as far as, like, the demise of someone losing their life.”
The incident has drawn criticism from some on the right, who have decried the lack of coverage for the brutal murder and aired suspicions that political bias played a role.
Decarlos Brown, 34, has been charged with Zarutska’s murder and could face the death penalty if convicted. The attack was captured on surveillance video from the public transit system.
