Comedian David Spade recently criticized a growing trend of malls avoiding the term “Christmas” during holiday tree-lighting ceremonies on his podcast with Dana Carvey, an “SNL” alum. The discussion occurred in a Sunday episode of Spade’s “Fly on the Wall” series.
Spade described witnessing a mall ceremony that lit a non-Christmas tree but carefully avoided using the word “Christmas” throughout the event. He stated: “I’ve never met someone from another religious faith that was upset about a Christmas tree.” When questioned why such events avoid the term, Spade asked: “Why? So it’s just a tree?” and added: “To consciously avoid that, then what is the tree for?”
Carvey agreed with Spade’s criticism. He acknowledged that Christmas has become somewhat secularized in modern practice.
Spade also briefly mentioned the persecution of Christians in Africa, saying: “We’re taking a beating down in Africa. It’s like, this is not the year to be Christian.”
