Pastor Josh Howerton of Lakepointe Church recently discussed the ongoing war against Christianity with Shawn Ryan, host of “The Shawn Ryan Show,” on what has set the stage for America’s present “prodigal son” moment.
Howerton emphasized that many Americans have recently become aware of dark spiritual forces at work in the world and prevailing forces of light secured by Christ at Calvary two millennia ago. He described the war against Christianity as primeval, tracing it to Satan declaring “war on the offspring that God’s going to use to redeem the world” after the Fall.
The pastor noted that Scripture identifies Satan as “the little-g god of this world,” and explained that the Bible consistently portrays him as dominating global systems. Howerton also highlighted a pattern where groups such as LGBT activists, feminists, and Islamists form alliances based on shared opposition to Christianity—describing it as “the enemy of my enemy is my friend: anything but Christianity.”
Ryan had inquired about Christianity’s growth trends, with recent polling showing declining apostasy rates in America. Howerton acknowledged global expansion of the faith but noted a historical decline in U.S. Christian participation, saying, “In my lifetime, Christianity in America has generally been declining.” He added that he feels “the tide is turning.”
Howerton drew parallels between current events and the biblical parable of the prodigal son, stating that America has finally realized “everything else didn’t work, but I know I can go home to Dad.” He concluded by calling the nation “a bit of a prodigal nation” in its spiritual awakening.
