Helen Haines, an independent member of Australia’s Parliament, was attacked by a man who allegedly rammed his car into her while she was retrieving items from her vehicle outside her Wangaratta office in Victoria on Monday.
The incident occurred as Haines placed something in her car when the alleged attacker struck. Police reports indicate the suspect drove his Toyota Land Cruiser into her, pinning her against the vehicle before reversing to strike her again. Bystanders rushed to assist Haines, while a local barber detained the 43-year-old suspect until police arrived. He was later identified as Brendan Nugent.
Haines underwent emergency surgery at a Melbourne hospital where doctors amputated her left leg on Monday. Two days later, her right leg was also removed. Her husband stated to reporters outside the hospital that “the good news in all this is that Helen is alive and she’s stable. That is the most important thing for our family.” He added, “We are grateful and thankful that, at this stage, both her heart and her mind are in good shape.”
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese characterized the incident as a “deliberate attack,” emphasizing Australians deserve to see their politicians safely performing duties without such threats. Victoria Police Chief Mike Bush noted investigators found no initial link between Nugent and Haines but stated: “Motivation is one of these things that we absolutely need to explore. His motivation for this, what we allege is a deliberate attack, is very much a centerpiece of the investigation.”
Police are investigating whether Nugent held extremist anti-government views as part of their review of social media associations and interactions with witnesses. Nugent was charged with one count each of dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a public official. He was also charged with cannabis possession and cultivation.
Wangaratta Mayor Irene Grant described the town’s reaction as “stunned,” stating: “What has happened to Helen has caused the community to step back in utter disbelief. We can’t believe it; people are horrified by what has happened.” Haines, 65 and married for 40 years to her husband, remains under medical care.
