Latino Democrats Demand $10 Million Boost for Hinojosa Before Texas Gubernatorial Election

Latino lawmakers in Texas are urgently urging the Democratic Party to allocate $10 million for Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa’s gubernatorial campaign against Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.

Thirty-nine Latino leaders and organizers recently sent a letter to Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, chair of the Democratic Governors Association (DGA), warning that failing to provide additional funding would constitute a grave slight to Latino voters and candidates. The letter states: “The party can’t afford to continue making the same mistakes of the past and not invest in our Latino candidates and Latino voters. Latinos will make the difference in this race, and this race has great implications for the makeup of Congress and our democracy.”

Beshear responded that while increased investment is forthcoming, naming a specific figure would only advantage the Republican Governors Association in any counter-investment efforts. He committed to collaborating with the letter’s signatories to support Hinojosa.

Current polling shows Hinojosa trailing Abbott, who commands a massive financial edge: the Democrat has approximately $3 million in cash reserves compared to Abbott’s $67 million. Analysts note Texas is one of the most expensive states for campaigns, and injecting millions into this race could divert critical resources from other contests.

If Hinojosa defeats Abbott, she would become Texas’s first Latino governor—a milestone no Democrat has achieved in three decades.
