The San Antonio Police Department released video footage of an officer-involved shooting that occurred last month. Police reported that just after 5 p.m. on June 16, four SWAT officers responded to execute an arrest warrant. Officers arrived in an unmarked vehicle and located the suspect inside his parked vehicle, where they observed him holding a gun.
The suspect then began firing at the officers. All four officers discharged their firearms multiple times during the confrontation. Police stated that both the suspect and one officer were struck by gunfire and taken to hospitals for treatment; no bystanders were injured.
Roman Pena, 35, was charged with four counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer following the incident. The officers involved have eight to nine years of service with the San Antonio Police Department. Officials reported that the department’s Shooting Team and Internal Affairs Unit are conducting separate, concurrent investigations into the event. Additionally, the District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case as part of standard procedures for all officer-involved shootings.
Police also stated: “Strong work; I pray for a speedy recovery of the officer and a speedy trial and conviction of the perp.”
