Spanish officials are dismantling some makeshift migrant camps in the Ceuta province of northern Africa following reports of at least 15 sexual assaults, most involving underage victims.
The government has relocated approximately 500 women and girls to mainland Spain for their safety. The alleged victims included residents from northern Morocco, which borders the small Spanish territory that had been overrun by an estimated 72,000 migrants as of late July.
According to reports, one girl claimed she was raped and forced to sell drugs, while another described being subjected to indecent contact. In both cases, the accused individuals were jailed or deported by judicial authorities.
Despite efforts to expel most illegal migrants, between 5,000 and 8,000 remain in wooded areas and coastal regions of Ceuta.
