Simpson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Cordarius Hobbs, 17, following an hours-long standoff at the home of Bill Blair, 75, and his wife Carol Blair, 71, in Mendenhall, Mississippi. The incident occurred on June 3 when contractors arrived to install a generator and discovered the Blairs’ car door left open with multiple guns inside.
An hour and a half later, deputies responded to a welfare check call for the elderly couple after the contractors reported gunshots. By noon, officers encountered active gunfire as Hobbs attempted to flee on foot but was captured wearing all black without a weapon—though he was shot during the standoff with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators recovered 280 bullet casings and three guns at the scene, all belonging to Bill Blair.
Carol Blair was found in a bedroom with three shots to her head, while Bill Blair lay dead in the kitchen with three shots to his face. Hobbs faces two counts of capital murder, burglary, four aggravated assaults with deadly weapons, four assaults on law enforcement officers, and two assaults on individuals 65 or older.
The Blairs’ family stated they had hired Hobbs for household cleaning tasks. Their pastor described the couple as “the sweetest” who “loved the Lord” and were rarely seen without each other. Less than a week after Hobbs’ arrest, his two brothers became fugitives during a massive manhunt following a police officer’s critical injury in a separate incident.
