Bill Maher, the prominent liberal comedian and longtime critic of religious conservatism, has recently stated that his potential vote for the 2028 presidential election might shift toward a Republican candidate. Speaking with Vice President JD Vance, Maher indicated that his ballot choice “is in play” and could potentially support either Vance or Marco Rubio if Republicans nominate the right candidate.
Maher clarified that he did not suddenly become conservative, nor has he adopted any conservative affiliations such as attending Turning Point USA events or becoming a Baptist. He emphasized that his shift toward the political center is a direct response to Democrats’ increasing leftward movement, which he described as moving “into madness.”
The comedian, known for his secular critiques and support of abortion rights, noted that he represents a segment of liberalism that still remembers what the Democratic Party once stood for: championing free speech, civil liberties, working-class people, and common sense. Maher recalled when liberals openly mocked religious fundamentalists rather than replacing them with secular alternatives in classrooms, workplaces, and academic settings.
Maher stressed that his potential shift does not represent a change in his core principles but rather a reaction to the Democratic Party’s trajectory toward what he characterized as “madness.”
